Partner-dependent communication without dynamic adaptation in autism.

People with autism can have a hard time communicating, especially if they feel nervous around others. In this study, researchers found that autistic people could change how they talked based on what they guessed about others’ abilities, but they didn’t change as much as others when they learned new things about the person they were talking to. Non-autistic people adjusted their communication more as they got to know their conversation partner better, which might be linked to having more experience with different people when they were young.
